but it is lovely that this myth persists.

As a Bosman we would have paid him a sizeable signing-on fee. Whatever that was, we paid it.
Then we would have paid his agent, certainly to buy him and maybe when he moved on
We also paid him wages for 12 months that, in all honesty, were greater than his worth / contribution.
