Of course it doesn’t stem from them originally

It stems from the amount people are prepared to pay to watch “whoever it is” play.

But because it happens to be “them” who are playing, they are the people generating the current income stream and they therefore get the benefit (or a fair old chunk of the benefit) of what people are currently prepared to pay
