I think a lot of it is based on city size

clubs like Leeds, Villa, Sheffield clubs, WBA, Wovles etc.. are big cities with a potential catchment areas of well over 1 million people. Plus most of them are historically significant institutions of the game. They are not so different in demographics to Liverpool, Everton, Man City, Newcastle...

I'm struggling to think of a club from a city with a population of less than 200,000 that would be called a 'big club' in any of the major European leagues.
