Well. I have a very narrow view. In my field (top commercial) all is well. For that reason it is a very competitive field and she wouldn’t have a chance, even given a leg up for the soft factors. Academic qualifications are not enough in themselves but they are an essential starting point.
Outside my ivory tower? I don’t know. The criminal bar is an exceptionally tough place to make a living and I wouldn’t recommend it. IP requires specialist science. Family is pretty soul destroying and anyway there’s no legal funding for it. General common law is the best target. For that she’ll definitely need a top 2:1 but preferably a first. There are good high value scholarships available from the Inns of Court for people like her.
To be honest it’s a lot safer as a solicitor. She can transfer to the bar later once she’s seen law in action and still fancies it.
