My take on this

is that they see him as ball playing centre half who can step out with the ball, carry it forward and help to build attacks with his passing, which is better than most centre halves. We've seen some flashes of this in some games.

His defending is sometimes suspect, and he has been at fault for a few goals, but he is still young and this is his first season at this level. Also, he has played in defence a lot at youth level. Generally I trust those who work with him on a daily basis to know what his best position is.
