would have been to say we are leaving, but will remain full EU members until such time as the new trading arrangements take effect. We could be 2 years into negotiations on a free trade deal by now.

But no, we had to be seen to be 'leaving' the EU by TMPM with the EU, not unreasonably, wanting to know what that actually means first.

We could still adopt this path...
