If you're saying they were really employees just pretending not to be, why would you not be paying all of them back pay in lieu of accrued holiday and so on, because as employees they were surely entitled to it?

Deloittes will still sell you consultants, of course, for a lot more than you were paying those who won't work for you any more. I'm not entirely sure those people are going unemployed either - but I suppose time will tell.
