If you're doing longer distances

I'd go for a more trad hybrid like the prius than a pure electric with a range extender.

My mate has his i3 on a rental agreement. They're not cheap, but he's saving a fortune on fuel. It basically works out as cost neutral at the moment for him, but he's paying up front.
