canals" rather than the "stations" the main canal or behind Piazza San Marco. There is actually a legally agreed hourly rate but many gondoliers will simply try to charge you two or three times the price and if you won't pay it, there will always be a dumb American behind you who will.
Catch one on a side canal and they will be far closer to the correct price. You might still have to pay 10% over or something, but don't go any higher than that.
