Don't blame yourselves. It was clearly my fault when despite reservations, I decided to

watch the game at the pub where I saw us knocked out in WC 1998, Euro 2000, and WC 2002 rather than either of the two I'd seen us play all the games so far this World Cup.

Schoolboy error, and I even knew I was tempting fate.
