it was a little loss of innocence

so it was upsetting to see - when they're that age they don't quite process the reality of prospective defeat - they sort of assume, in their deepest thoughts, that all will be well (whereas once older, and "wiser", and having lived through all these bastard defeats before, you almost assume the opposite ...)
