It's an 'it depends' answer. Ultimately you get to a position where the tank is balanced and largely looks after itself, but how long it takes to get there and how involved it is really depends on what you're keeping and how densely you're stocking the tank.

Eg goldfish are grubby f**kers that need lots of water changes etc (and rapidly outgrow tanks) but a tropical tank with non-fussy things tend to be relatively low maintenance. Some marine tanks can be low maintenance but more of a faff getting to that happy place.

Don't overstock. Stick to small shoals of a couple types rather than a Noah's Ark of all the pretty ones from the aquatic centre.

Avoid goldfish
