Wroth Travel experts - Onward flights from Manchester after flying from Nodge

Anyone have any experience of flying out of Norwich to Manchester, then on from Manchester (USA in our case).
We did it years ago, but stayed overnight so doesnt really count.
We might be going to US with the family next year and I'm wondering if it would actually be easier to catch the 06:55 out of Norwich and then a connecting flight at Manchester, rather than bugger about with getting to Gatwick/Heathrow.
