What is the official metric?

For me it's whoever won the last meeting between us, unless one side's in a higher division, which kind of trumps everything.

Others seem to go on league position.

What would Jesus do?

Either way I feel no particular worry about us ending lower than them this term, just as I would take no particular joy were the places reversed; yes our prospects for next term feel much brighter than theirs (pace the Maddison sitch), and whatever was true in the 1970s there can surely be no argument that we've been much the "bigger" club by more or less any measure for decades not years; but the reality is this season we've both failed and it doesn't much matter which of us failed better.
