In favour of going to watch local non-league instead.
I know it’s happening already in some cases but I mean on a larger scale. What’s promoted this thought is reading comments from other supporters on other message boards and talking to other football fans I know. A small sample size yes but it seems like most people I know are getting more and more fed up with what football has become.
Look at this board for example. A lot of people are constantly complaining about the club for either spending too much money or having a lack ambition (rightly or wrongly) and then others are fed up with the perceived constant complaining (again rightly or wrongly).
Seems to me that unless you support one of the top 6 prem teams (and actually in some cases including them) football today is sucking the joy out of a lot of people. It used to be a game that you could go and watch and forget about life for a couple of hours, and just have a good time with your friends, win lose or draw. Now football is just becoming a grind with little to no chance of any success unless you are bankrolled by an Arabian Prince, and even then it’s no guarantee.
A few of my friends have sort of given up on league football recently and found a non-league team to go and watch instead. A team where they are welcomed and any support is appreciated. I wonder if we will reach a point where many people just can’t be bothered with the top tiers anymore and we see a huge drop in crowds across the country. Or maybe it’s just an age thing and the young fans coming into the game now will keep the numbers up because that’s all they know? Who knows?
It was this comment from a West Ham fan that promoted this mess of words...
“I am hating modern football, in which "success" is all about money, and vice versa. Time to find a little non-league club who would welcome our support.”
