Dear Wrath Web of Knowledge (Travel Dept) - Croatia, Pula advice needed

Thinking of including some time in Istria during this summer's holiday (Italian Lake part already booked). Will be driving down and wondered if any of the well travelled (well heeled?!) amongst you have appropriate knowldege or advice?

Pula is looking promising for fine weather and Roman historical sites. Need to avoid holidaying brits and major resorts if at all possible.
