I'm not sure one of them had a greater downside potential than the other

we could still get relegated next season with the approach we are taking. We could be entering a downward spiral of constantly selling our best players and replacing them with worse quality each time, until we have no saleable assets and are in real financial trouble again. We could still be staring into the abyss with this approach - particularly if we get relegated.

The approach we have taken only has limited downside potential if it works. If it doesn't work and we get relegated in the next few years - we're basically in trouble however it happens.
