Almost 250 years of history I'm afraid....

....probably needs a whole lot more (and bigger) shooting atrocities to occur before anything is done about it. Trump is vague about any form of gun control at best and given that he is a Republican and therefore inevitably funded by the NRA I can't see he can do anything about it even if he wanted. The whole American political system of checks and balances is very complex. Obama wanted much tighter legislation but he couldn't get anything through. Hope I'm wrong but the NRA see it as basic right to have guns and there will always be extreme factions within that group itself as this video seems to show. Scary - we may not be perfect at all but stuff like this makes you glad you live in the UK.
