Carrying fire arms is such second nature to many (and it does very much depend on where in the US you are, urban v rural and all sorts of other considerations), and there are just so many firearms out there, that there is no easy answer.
Over time attitudes will change but there is no quick fix to it.
Tighter gun controls might help a little, better support for things like mental health would help a lot, but fundamentally you need a big shift in attitudes at a society level and that'll take several more generations.
There are still people alive who can remember grandpappy being a gunslinger in the Wild West. That sort of s**t is still in their national psyche in some places. You can drive around parts of the mid west and it's like stepping back in time.
Traditions die hard.
