because persons unknown at the BBC have spent a f**kload of time & money preparing for a road-to-redemption feel-good story, so they have to justify the time/money spent doing that by hyping her up and making this the Christie Olympics.

Fortunately for the BBC, there's nothing the British viewing public love more than a valiant loser, so the effort hasn't been wasted. We don't seem to be as interested in success stories as we are in the so-near-but-so-far stories.
