Or maybe I was just lucky at my school? I'm so grateful for the opportunities I had. It was a genuine comprehensive with a wide range of social classes and aspirations for us all were high. Despite my mum and dad both leaving school at 14, they were fiercely supportive of what ever we wanted to do. Their belief in us gave us the confidence lots of the kids featured on the programme seemed to be lacking. (Well done to the teachers for stepping up. I'm very proud of them!) The other huge advantage I had was I didn't have to worry about money. We had no money at home. I was also a free school meals kid, but leaving school when I did, I was able to get a full grant to attend free university.
It doesn't seem a lot to ask for that others have the same opportunities as I did.
I've loved this programme and found it really moving.
