I headed down to Loughborough with Mrs Dunney early on to visit our daughter who is at Uni there. Went for the 12.40 train to Derby and lo and behold there were a couple of City supporters stood on the platform, heading to the game. Had a bit of a chat and turns out one of them has a niece on the same Uni course as Miss Dunney. Waird entut?
Anyway, arrived at Derby station and it was cold and wet so had my coat done up to the neck. Made my way to the Brunswick pub, as recommended off of on here and in the good beer guide. A friendly nod at the door and in I go. The place was heaving, but a quick look around revealed a total lack of green and yellow. With my lovely pint of real ale in hand I made my way to a space near the door where I came in. Then I noticed a guy (who turns out to be the landlord) asking everyone who turns up if they are home or away supporters, explaining that away supporters are barred this year! Says that he has a limit of 300 in the pub and last year about 200 Norwichers arrived all at once and the locals couldn't get in. So he had posted on the NCFC website saying no away supporters. By this point, with it being warmer in the pub, I had undone my coat, revealing my city shirt, as I stood right beside him. “How the f#ck did you sneak in here?” he said. “I’m just here for the beer” I cheerily replied. Anyway, it was all good ‘bantz’; talking to a couple of Rams supporters they seemed quite pleased they had Jerome and BJ, thinking we might be coasting a bit now as we are mid-table, so I put them right on that. All in all a lovely session at the Brunswick and no bother at all. TBF, at 299 Rams to 1 Canary, the odds were against them.
On to the game. Pride Park is a pleasant stadium, easy access, uninterrupted views and a decent crowd. The City support in the corner were pretty vocal and getting behind the team, with the usual impatient “get it forward ffs” seeming to be the loudest voice from behind me. It’s a pity all the goal action was at the far end, and especially the second half when Derby hardly made it across halfway, it would have been nice to see City attacking our end. The home crowd were booing Madz after about 10 minutes and never stopped. Obviously because, like all the other teams, they are jealous he plays for us. Even at a goal down I thought we were comfortable enough to get something and as it turns out, yes we probably should have won. Once we figured out how to get Moritz on the ball, after about 15 minutes, we never looked troubled at all. I can’t agree with Archant’s Michael Bailey that it looked like a mistake playing Leitner ahead of Vrancic; and I like Vrancic. I sometimes wonder what those Archant boys are watching.
All in all a great day. It felt like a win really. And as has been said many times before it’s not scrummage ffs, it’s SCRIMMAGE.
