Match Magazine

Not a comic per se but living south of London where everyone supported Palace, Arsenal, etc., as a kid, I didn't even know Norwich had a football team (no internet or MOTD repeats on Sunday mornings in those days) - I saw Match in my local newsagents and Flecky was on the cover - I'd never seen a kit like it and thought it looked awesome. As kids couldn't watch MOTD back then, they used to recreate the goal of the week as a comic strip. We had scored a goal against Charlotn that got the treatment that week and I was mesmorised. The rest, as they say, is history.

A couple of years ago, I met Flecky. He was with Huckerby at a book signing and I told this story. Hucks thought it was hilarious - probably because it would have made Flecky feel pretty old...

Years later and I live across the road from Flecky - coincidence, not stalkerville! - very surreal; a little boy from Kent now living across the road from his childhood football hero - all traced back to a copy of Match magazine...
