I don't want to get all Larrald, but there does seem to be a certain level of wilful ignorance at the establishment/media level and a reluctance to dig very much below the surface on mahy of these issues.

I think if people knew more about it, there'd be more interest in tackling it.

Problem being that there are no easy answers to the underlying problems, many potential answers would be politically unpalatable for parties of all hues, and we really need a full overhaul of how we approach society and public services and the state (and ultimately, where does the money for it all come from...)

and then if/when we do ever solve the current issues, automation hits and the manual and professional classes get f**ked over by robotics and the world gets turned upside down for all of us.

Maybe that'll be the point where we finally sit down and work out how we want to re-construct our society.
