But sometimes you don;t know what life holds

To be honest I'd argue that public life and the public sector needs to be able to attract top people from the private sector. There are too many career politicians who are the ones who know they are going to go into public life from the outset. Others don't.

I've often thought that in time I would quite like to do something more public spirited at some point in my career (even if it means less money) but i've definitely done things (not illegal but stupid yes) when younger that could be thrown back at me, told inappropriate jokes and probably posted things on here and face book that could be cited back against me.

There is a difference between acting like a bit of a t**t and doing things that should make you fundamentally unsuitble to sever hold public office. I think a lot of people have acted like a "bot of a t**t" at some point in their lives.
