I actually think it’s slightly worrying that we’re paying a fee for him now...

Rather than waiting until the summer. Shows a few things IMO.

A) Shows the pulling power of the club if we aren’t confident of securing him for free in less than 6 months time.

B) Any other clubs interested aren’t prepared to pay the fee (which is relatively small) and only wanted to take him for free.
