It is by far the least dangerous plan available

And throughout our history we've been a club that loses our most valuable players to higher things (even in the glory years, remember Townsend, Phelan, Lininghan, Fleck, Fox, Sutton and Mike Walker etc etc). That's the size of club we are and always have been. And we've generally survived just fine that way.
