Couldn't agree more about the cultural Revolution stuff at the start

I was sat there five pages in thinking "I thought this was supposed to be a sci-fi." But persistence pays off, and it wasn't long until all of that became contextualised.

One of my favourite scifis that. I have the sequel on my to-read shelf, but haven't got round to it yet.

Glad you enjoyed it.

(It's really a four-body problem though, that's my only grumble)
