there is no profit to be made from a private company starting rival A&E departments all over the country for private patients, so they are happy for the NHS to do that.

However, private companies now bid for contracts to run parts of the NHS. They can make money from ambulance service contracts, follow-up treatment after A&E, and run a whole hospital.
