I really like it. Lively, quite edgy in places but also large and cosmopolitan in others.
The docks and St Pauli area have been largely gentrified now, they used to be quite frightening. Going to the Fischmarkt from 5am used to be a good way to finish (or start) the night.- live music, beer and eels fresh off the boats. Of course there’s the Reeperbahn as well. I only went down there out of curiosity, you understand. I believe nowadays it’s not so full of hookers and the bars are more expensive and less of a risk (but more boring).
Pöseldorf and the area along the side of the Alster is where a lot of the money is. Very nice though, if you like rowing clubs and large villas. Also expensive cafes and boutiques.
It’s a proper city, all in.
