Or certainly that was the case yesterday and in the last few weeks.

I think to be a true escape goat you have to be relentlessly blamed for things that aren’t your fault. Last season, if I remember correctly, our record was better with Martin in the team than otherwise (certainly at some point) yet if he was on the pitch and we let a goal in it was always his doing. Someone would trace the play back to find his involvement.
