Listen to earlyish live recordings of the Beatles - it's like a modern rock drummer, he's everywhere and yet never in the way.

Is he technically the best drummer EVER? No. George Harrison was not technically the best guitarist ever, nor was Paul the best bassist. The four of them still changed everything, though; in a context where there was no youth culture, or only the stirrings of one, what they created was genuinely revolutionary.

I'm still not much of a fan of much of their output; but you don't do what they did if you're a bit rubbish.
