because he (presumably) told his bosses that

he could get paid x% more (or Y better benefits) elsewhere and might need to agitate for a move. So, rather than lose a player, we've offered him a better/longer deal to keep him happy here.

Which, when you think about it, means we've stopped a player leaving so we haven't had to replace him with a new one so that's almost as good as a new signing, right? Right.
