Spain had some of the best players in the world and

maybe the greatest midfield of all time. Which was probably much more of a factor in their dominance than the formation/tactics they employed.

Playing slow, passing football with average players, in a league where most other teams play with lots of pace and with quick transitions, is generally not going to work well.
