We let the Leave campaigns dictate the narrative, we didn't force the issue with the media, we underestimated the size of the task.

It's easy to blame the Brexiteers for their lies, half truths and downplaying the negatives but at the end of the day we didn't do enough to skewer them on most of this.

The failure was letting the voters go to the polls thinking that there could be anything other than hard Brexit as the alternative.

Leaving the single market on leaving the EU is a legal certainty. It's how the treaties are set up. The uncertainty was/is whether we'd get a trade deal afterwards.
