Hughes is consistently abysmal. But if Safri plays badly, he plays badly.

And it shouldn't be out of bounds to say so.

But I'd much rather have Safri playing badly than Hughes playing ... I was about to say 'well', but 'to the best of his ability' is probably more appropriate.
