I would guess...

the reason Hucks gets more criticism is simply because he plays a lot more whereas McVeigh is dropped at teh drop of a hat, rather than because of a general opinion that McVeigh is a better player.

My problem with Hucks (who had an absolutely awesome season in 2003/4 without which we would almost certainly never have got promoted - something which guarantees him City Legend status whatever else he may/may not do) is that when he isn't on absolute top 2003/4 style form (as he rarely has been since, which I don't have a problem with - I think he was playing above his natural level that year not playing below it since) his presence distorts the team shape in an adverse way. That isn't Hucks' fault or a criticism of him. He doesn't pretend to be something he isn't and you know what you are getting with him. He is an old-style individual entertainer in a modern game in which tactics and teamwork now dominate.
