Here's the trick

Lather nugget (i.e. Boot polish, e.g. Kiwi) on nice and thick, then heat up the back of a spoon with a fag lighter (Hold the safe end in a rag, or you'll burn yourself). Give the nuggetted area some flame, then rub with the back of the hot spoon.

Polish as normal, then repeat. In future, you can kick the s**t out of them, and they'll polish up in an instant.
