Nothing on earth is more tedious. When I'm running long I run at whatever pace feels comfortable - it's more about time on feet than speed or even distance, really. I really hold back the first two or three miles as the temptation is to gallop off and leave nothing in the tank for later. I do four runs in a week: long, steady, fast (for me! Tortoise-like for everyone else) and recovery. "Fast" is one of hill sprints, tempo, fartlek, short intervals or long intervals - I just mix it up while I'm in maintenance i.e. not training for a specific race.
