But the biggest issues facing our society are not barriers to talent

The biggest issues are wealth gap, generational worklessness in vulnerable and chaotic families, poverty etc etc.

I'm waving no red flag here necessarily, but I am saying that meritocracy as a principle is about looking after those with ability and not looking after those without it.

This is still a divisive approach.
