I'm not saying th EU is undemocratic on its own terms, but that

we were asked if we wanted to be part of a democracy which limits our ability to make decisions as an independent nation.

It's all a question of degree. Should Little Wittering On The Wold be allowed to vote for independence? Some of its denizens would probably love it, but there seems to be no widespread clamour for such a course.
The UK seems to be about the right size & is historically, culturally & geographically suited to be an independent democratic state (& that can be brought into question - as it was recently). Personally that's what I'd like to see happen.
