Signing any player is a gamble, from lower-league or big money.
There is also the subjectivity test, and expectations - very few would take Steve Morison back (example), but he scored more goals for us than Mbokani.

As for Lambert's recruitment; there were plenty of duds Steven Smith? Leon Barnett? Mcnamee? Vaughan?
