One difference might be how he felt/feels about it

Saying "they were stubborn" suggests he thought the club was acting unreasonably. Saying "they stood firm" suggests he thought the club was acting reasonably.

Clearly either one of these trains of thought is going to have some impact on how he views his employers, don't you think? With the knock-on effect of how committed he would be to NCFC.

Of course what he actually *thinks* is just speculation, but you asked for a difference and there is (a possible) one.
