It was a Stephen Fry doco about language/wurds, and they were testing the hypothesis that swearing can help one withstand and cope with physical pain. That's why his hand is in the ice water. IIRC Fry said "this is the hypothesis, so I've recruited the most fluent and extravagant swearer I know" (paraphrase)
