This is utter rubbish

We are not cancelling his contract. The transfer deal is something that is agreed between us, Sunderland AND the player. As part of that agreement between parties the player will pretty much always give up any outstanding obligation from the selling club (unless, as I said, he is having to take a big pay cut).
Nobody would ever sell anyone otherwise (since you are paying them to play for someone else) and players would be agitating for a move every season so that they could be paid by several teams at once.
