Like most of the big clubs...

You pile up young talent (and send them out) in the hope that they'll develop well and make you a nice profit (they're not costing much in the meantime since someone else is paying the wages).
Or they'll be good enough to join the first team squad. In our case they're also insurance for when the parachute payments run out. We'll probably find it hard to sign anyone decent next summer if we don't go up - with only one year of parachute payments remaining offering any any sizeable contract will probably be a no-go.
