You can build yourself and have the site hosted using various platforms:

Wordpress, Wix, SiteBuilder etc.

The downside is online exposure, there is no point having a website if nobody can find it. Standalone DIY platforms have come on a lot with regard to SEO and ranking exposure, but nothing can beat bespoke, hand-coded sites with SEO researched and built-in from the off. This is a simplified overview

The only time I use a DIY platform is if the customer doesn't have the budget for a bespoke build.
