As for the beeb, I don't think it's any secret they're running scared of the Tories and the charter renewal. Murdoch wields so much power in the tories that getting the Beeb's influence reduced was almost a given.

I do agree with your comment that honours should be witheld until the career is done though, that just seems proper to me. With someone like Sir Andy Murray what are they supposed to do if/when he wins another 3 or 4 wimbledons? Give him a dukedom and a fiefdom of land?

Is it a distraction? Sure. It's a better distraction than Made in Essex Shore Kyle show though.
