however I would also suggest that people need to be consistent regarding their socio-economic judgements on major sporting events.

I don't recall a single post regarding the World Cup two years ago and doubtless it will be watched avidly in Russia and Qatar despite dozens of people literally dying to make the latter happen.

As someone else said, if all money invested in sporting competition was diverted to address social issues, what sport would ever actually happen?
