Erdogan has been purging secularists from the army and police for years. I wouldn't be surprised if they tapped up a few naive commanders leading them to believe there would be support. Got erdogan out of the way to start with. Then squash the totally under strength coup as the secularist are abandoned by the military leadership. Not only has he now improved his status but has also exposed the remaining secularist threat within the military, the only organism with the mandate to stop him.
